Bows, Guns, Wind, and Prairie Dogs

Have you ever heard of YHEC?

It's a wonderful program and competition for boys and girls up to 18 years old, and let me tell you, there are some very talented competitors.

YHEC is recognized as the most comprehensive youth hunting program anywhere in North America, the Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is NRA’s “graduate studies” program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters.

Open to any youth (boys and girls) 18 years of age and under who have completed the Hunter Education Course through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation may participate.

The competition consists of many categories, including:

• Muzzleloader

• Shotgun

• .22 Rifle

• Archery

• Wildlife ID

• Orienteering

• Hunter Safety Trail

• Hunter Responsibility Exam

This is the perfect program to learn and compete all at the same time.

Our son Wade, loves to hunt, fish, shoot his bow and guns, and compete in shooting sports events.
I often refer to him as a walking hunting, fishing, and outdoorsman encyclopedia.

He spends countless hours practicing and studying.

It's a joy to discover your child's gifts and talents, and this kid has many.

Okay, enough of mommy bragging and back to YHEC.

The competition was in western Oklahoma four hours away from our home. If you've never been to western Oklahoma, you'd better make sure your wig is glued down before you go. It is a wind tunnel there!

We camped at the lake in our RV, escaped not getting blown away, got sand burrs on our shoes and jeans, and watched the prairie dogs run in and out of their burrows.

We had a lot of fun, met some new people, but were happy to get back to our side of the state.

Oh, and did I mention...He cut his finger and had to have stitches the day before?

Wade was awarded overall high point winner. Good job son!
