Change Through Self-Examination

Nov 07, 2018

Have you ever stopped to think about why your life hasn't been working?

Have you ever taken the time to self-examine your behaviors, your mindsets, your thoughts and intentions, your ambitions, and the way you treat yourself as well as others?

Most of us never think about self-examination much less doing it, but what if it could change your situation, your relationships, and your success in life?

Self-examination involves going to places you don't want to go, and admitting you have problems that need to be fixed.

"Change happens through self-examination and self-awareness"

What is self-examination?

The dictionary describes it as a careful examination of your own behavior and beliefs to see whether they are good or bad.

How must we examine?  Carefully.

What must we examine? Our behavior and beliefs.

You might believe all things are going well in your life and there is nothing wrong with your behavior, but you know that isn't the truth.

The Bible tells us, knowing the truth sets us free.

John 8:32
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The truth not only applies to knowing the gospel but also to every area of our life.

The fact is your spirit and your flesh are constantly warring against each other. Your flesh has to be trained and crucified to do what is right. By nature, it wants to be rude and hateful, jealous and envious and is tempted to do anything contrary to the word of God.

Galatians 5:16-17 NLT

"So let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.  The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions."

Let the Holy Spirit led you into the areas of your life that need to be changed. He is for you and not against you.

Mark 14:38 NKJV
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.  His power from within is the only force strong enough to help you crucify the flesh and resist temptation.

Romans 8:5 NKJV
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:8 NKJV
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You have to set your mind to do good and do what is pleasing in the sight of the Lord.

Not only do you have to crucify your flesh, you also have to take control of your thoughts.

If your thoughts are not renewed with the word of God--the truth, your life will be unbalanced and you will be more likely to fall into sin, temptation, and bad behaviors.

With self-examination comes self-awareness.  If you are aware of your behavior, your mindsets, your thoughts, and intentions, you are more likely to correct them.

If you are not aware of your behavior and how it may be affecting your life, then you will continue on the same path you have been going, but how do you know good from bad?

Don't look to the world for answers.  Look into the word of God, the only place to find what is good and bad, and how you should live your life.

These are a few key areas to examine.

How has your life been going?
How are you getting along with others?
Do you like the way you treat yourself?
Is your behavior affecting your relationships, your career, and disrupting your life?
Are you thoughts keeping you from accomplishing your dreams?
Are you constantly angry and hard to get along with?
What are those you respect saying about your behavior?

Examine every area of your life. Answer these questions by writing them down in a journal. Be truthful, and purpose in your heart to do better.  You will need the Lord's help to change.  You won't be able to do it alone.

Ask Him. He is waiting. He wants to help you.

You can make a positive change in your life by being willing to dig deep into your heart, mind, and soul and getting rid of those things that are holding you back.

When you are aware of yourself, you are better prepared to deal with yourself.

Embrace change, for with it, could hold the blessing you have been waiting for.
