Have a Hay Day

Mar 01, 2018

Some of my fondest childhood memories were made watching the tractors spit out the big round bales of hay and sometimes square ones. I loved the smell of freshly mowed hay... until the hay fever kicked in but it didn't stop me from watching.  My family has always baled hay. My dad has spent many hours behind the wheel of a tractor and has rolled up thousands of hay bales in his lifetime...I'm not kidding thousands.

All across the plains of rural America, you will find farmers baling hay. Why? Because animals have to eat in the winter too! But why are there so many ways to put up hay?  There are round bales, square bales, very large square bales, piles, and no telling what else.  People put up hay for the winter months in different ways.  I guess it is simply a preference.

A long time ago, my family baled only square bales.  The bad thing about square bales...you have to load them by hand. Well, they do have square bale hay picker-uppers.  My dad always had someone else do the hard work.  It was always too hot to load hay during the day so a lot of the time it is done at night when it is cooler.  If there is such a thing as a cooler summer night.

It was my job to drive the hay wagon as the fellas threw the bales onto it. It always amazed me how high they could throw.  The hay wagon was a standard shift and it was always difficult going up a hillside and not throwing someone off the top.  Ask me how I know..

When I was little I also wanted to drive the tractor.  I can remember sitting on my Grandpa's lap holding onto the large tractor steering wheel and feeling like I was ten feet tall.  I also remember running over a few things too...like the fence.  Oh, well, live and learn as my granny always said.

That was years ago, and this is now.  My dad still bales hay and I still love to drive tractors.  Big green ones.

In celebration of hay days in rural America and of the many childhood memories I will forever treasure, I recently designed this t-shirt for our Rural America Girl collection...check it out.
