The Roping Box

A lot of things happen in the roping box.

It's a place where horses learn to stand still, be patient, and mind their manners.

The roping box is a three-sided box surrounded with metal fencing.  It is a place where cowboys and cowgirls get their start when it comes to roping events.

There are different types of roping events, the two most popular are tie-down calf roping and team roping. The roping box is also used for steer-wrestling or what we call bull-dogging.

The roping box is a starting point for horse and rider much like a runner has a starting point before the race begins. It is at this starting point both set patiently as the calf or steer is being loaded into the chute.

Once the animal is in the chute, a person referred to as the chute help drops the handle or pushes a button to release the calf or steer and then the chase begins.

The rider chases the animal down the arena to catch up with it in order to throw a loop in hopes to catch it around the horns, around the neck, or wrestle it down with his bare hands.

It all happens very quickly and quick is the key to winning at the rodeo.

My family loves to ride horses and practice roping in our arena on most every cool evening.

My son is learning how to calf rope and is doing very well. He also likes to team rope with his dad.

I don't ride much, but you can find me in the arena opening the chute. I don't mind though, spending time with my family is one of my favorite things to do even if I get splattered now and then with calf poop and slobbers.

I love this cowboy way of life and wouldn't trade it for the world.

I wish everyone could learn to mind their manners much like horses do in the roping box.
